Manager, Shift

Title:                                                                Shift Manager, Data Center Traveling Setup
Location:                                                         Assigned project sites throughout the United States
Travel:                                                             Approximately 75% percent including extended overnight assignments

Position Summary

Lead the assigned shift for a traveling team that sets up data centers across the United States. Manage Operations Supervisors, Warehouse Leads, and hourly employees performing unloading, receiving, staging, inventory movement, and the assembly and placement of server racks or towers within the contracted scope. Translate the Operations Manager’s site plan into safe, accurate, and productive shift execution. Own shift staffing, work assignments, performance, quality, and handoff to the next shift. After project completion, deploy with the team to the next assigned location.

This position requires approximately 90 percent nationwide travel, extended overnight assignments, and flexibility to work assigned day, night, weekend, or holiday shifts. Strong professional communication and the ability to respond to changing project priorities and short-notice deployment requests are essential.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and direct daily shift activities against the approved labor plan, customer priorities, standard work, and project schedule. Confirm staffing, equipment, materials, and work areas are ready before work begins.
  • Manage assigned Operations Supervisors and Warehouse Leads; direct the work of at least two full-time employees or their equivalent on a regular basis. Delegate assignments, coach leaders, evaluate performance, and verify work completion.
  • Participate in hiring and provide documented recommendations regarding selection, promotion, discipline, and separation within assigned authority, partnering with HR and the Operations Manager.
  • Coordinate unloading, receiving, verification, staging, inventory movements, rack or tower assembly and placement, and installation support within approved procedures and contractual responsibilities.
  • Adjust shift work assignments and coverage to address absences, workload changes, and delays within approved staffing and spending limits. Escalate needs that exceed delegated authority.
  • Conduct shift startup meetings covering priorities, hazards, staffing, quality requirements, and lessons learned. Verify employees understand their assignments and have required training before performing work.
  • Monitor labor utilization, productivity, inventory accuracy, rework, equipment availability, and completion milestones. Investigate variances, implement corrective actions, and report unresolved risks to the Operations Manager.
  • Reinforce safe material handling, equipment use, and required personal protective equipment. Stop unsafe work, secure the area when appropriate, and coordinate with Health and Safety before work resumes.
  • Partner with Quality, Engineering, Training, and SAP or inventory support to maintain standard work, traceability, accurate receiving and movement records, and customer acceptance requirements.
  • Coordinate shift activities with customer representatives, contractors, and internal teams. Communicate progress, staffing, delays, incidents, and decisions accurately and promptly; escalate scope changes rather than making unauthorized commitments.
  • Oversee accurate time and attendance reporting. Support required breaks, approved leave, accommodations, and lawful scheduling practices with HR; escalate payroll discrepancies promptly.
  • Address employee concerns and performance issues with HR. Maintain factual documentation, safeguard confidential information, and promptly report resignations or other separation concerns through the approved process.
  • Support deployment readiness and coordinate employee travel needs with the Travel team. Follow approved travel, expense, and card procedures; do not independently change benefits or authorize unapproved costs.
  • Provide a documented shift handoff covering completed and outstanding work, inventory exceptions, equipment status, staffing, safety or quality concerns, and next-shift priorities.
  • Support punch-list completion, material reconciliation, equipment return, customer handoff, and project closeout. Capture lessons learned and apply them at the next deployment.

Required Qualifications

  • At least five years of progressively responsible experience in warehousing, logistics, distribution, manufacturing, or project setup, including at least two years leading teams. Comparable experience demonstrating the required capabilities may be considered.
  • Experience directing shift operations, coordinating supervisors or leads, planning labor, and managing employee performance and operational schedules.
  • Ability to read and apply work instructions, site layouts, customer specifications, and project plans; interpret operational data and resolve shift-level problems.
  • Proficiency with Excel, reporting tools, and warehouse or enterprise systems; ability to maintain accurate operational records.
  • Strong professional written and verbal communication, customer service, organization, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to perform the essential functions, including approximately 90 percent nationwide travel and assigned shift schedules, with or without reasonable accommodation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with data center deployments, server racks or towers, high-value technology equipment, or comparable technical logistics projects.
  • Experience launching new sites, supervising traveling teams, and coordinating work with multiple contractors or customers.
  • Knowledge of SAP or another ERP/WMS platform, inventory traceability, and continuous improvement methods.
  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in operations, supply chain, business, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.

Work Environment and Physical Functions

Work occurs in offices and active warehouse or data center setup areas with equipment movement, noise, changing layouts, and customer security requirements. The role includes moving through work areas to observe operations, reviewing system records and project plans, communicating with employees and customers, and using computers and communication devices. Required personal protective equipment must be used. Essential functions may be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.

Licensed trade work and equipment operation requiring certification are performed only by appropriately authorized and qualified personnel. The Shift Manager coordinates this work within assigned authority and does not perform restricted work without the required authorization and qualifications.

Scope of Authority

The Shift Manager is responsible for execution of the assigned shift. The Operations Manager retains overall site operational planning and coordination. Changes to contractual scope, project schedules, staffing budgets, compensation, and employment actions require the appropriate review and approval.
