Database Administration Manager

Join us as a Database Administration Manager and manage a Global team of DBA’s, currently located in Europe and North America. The team supports numerous Database platforms including Oracle, Progress, SAG, SQL, SAP Basis and PostgreSQL.

About the Role

How you will contribute

  • Work in an environment of multiple DB platforms and applications. Design platforms and future solutions.
  • Work with 5 different Application teams for code releases, performance support and uptime on the DB’s.
  • Work closely with Infrastructure Managers, Apps Managers, Development Managers regarding Projects, Architecture, codes releasing and performance matrices.
  • Oversee the performance of the DBA team support in relation to Analysis & Design, Development, Installation, Dataguard, Database and Application server upgrades, Performance Tuning and Migration skills.
  • Written skills required for Performance Evaluation of staff, for reports to Management and numerous other tasks.
  • Perform benchmark comparisons of database systems as needed.
  • Evaluate and recommend new database technologies.
  • Ensure systems maintenance, support, installations, upgrades, performance monitoring and storage administration is carried out, while providing functional guidance and direction to IT and client base.
  • Provide systems management oversight to IT and the Business in relation to server applications, systems and operational requirements and how future and current requirements may impact the solutions.
  • Support of PostgreSQL, Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL, Amazon Redshift, Azure Database for PostgreSQL and other cloud friendly DB technologies. 

Key accountabilities

  • Team management and staff performance administration.
  • Maintenance is performed within the agreed downtime window and systems are production ready post maintenance.
  • Provide an escalation point for out of hours support issues when team members are not available or the issues are not getting resolved.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose and resolve DB problems and provide critical updates when required.
  • Ensure site and data centre documentation is properly updated when changes are made to syncreon systems.
  • Understand DB licensing, manage numbers correctly and be accountable for this.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • A combination of equivalent professional training and certifications, combined with a minimum of 4 years related work experience in a position(s) with increasing responsibility and supervisory duties may be accepted.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise under pressure.
  • Previous experience following change management, change control processes and problem management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment effectively.
  • Experience in at least 2 of the following: Oracle Versions 11g, 12c Progress version 9, 10 and 11. SQL 2017, SAG.
  • Working in environments such as HPUX 11i, RedHat Linux, Windows 2008, 2012, 2016, SQL Developer, Shell Scripting, Oracle 11g, 12c, and 18c.
  • Experience in working with programming languages (Python, R, Perl, Java, Bash, PowerShell, for example) for general purpose programming e.g. accessing APIs, automating processes, manipulating data and prediction.
  • Ability to write, present and explain complex concepts to non-technical people with a clear, transparent and open approach to communicating your ideas.
