DOT Health and Safety Manager

How you will contribute

  • Lead and oversee all aspects of development, implementation, standardization, and management of the assigned location’s DOT Trucking Compliance Programs, including CMV Files, DOT Driver Qualification Files, DOT Drug/Alcohol Programs, Vehicle Inspections and Hours of Service.
  • Manage the processes for Driver Background Checks, Pre-Employment Medical Screening & DOT Physicals, Previous Employer Release of Information, in coordination & conjunction with HR and Operations Personnel.
  • Prepare and submit required Federal and State DOT Trucking Registrations, Licensing and compliance reports.
  • Conduct incident investigations, root-cause analysis, follow-up, and closure of action items, and leverage learning across organization for all vehicle accidents involving Company personnel and/or equipment.
  • Work with Operations Personnel to implement and manage detailed, proactive systems to ensure compliance with Federal and State DOT Trucking regulations and Company requirements, with a strong emphasis on a Management Systems approach to compliance.
  • Conduct Trucking & Transportation applicability determinations, compliance audits, and risk assessments to ensure effective and sustainable implementation of Regulatory and Company requirements at each of the truck operations.
  • Review pending and upcoming changes to Federal & State DOT Trucking regulations to ensure the Company is prepared for future compliance requirements. Develop and communicate impact summaries of future regulatory changes to Leadership and Operations Management.
  • Seek out industry best practices and more effective and efficient methods to achieve Operational Excellence in Incident Prevention and DOT Trucking Compliance.
  • Ensure all transport fleet vehicles are properly maintained
  • Maintain routine communication with management regarding the placement of trailers both in door and in the drop lot
  • Design and develop written health and safety procedures.  Monitor, revise, and implement ongoing updates in safety regulations, laws or reporting requirements. Provide technical safety and health support and information to all employees.  
  • Responsible for the co-coordination of risk assessment activities including record keeping. Analysis of risk assessment, near miss and accident data to presenting to the senior management team. Develop long term strategies to reduce accidents that are data driven.  
  • Investigate accidents to include gathering all documentation in line with company policies, compiling all documentation relating to any insurance claims made against the company, and liaising with insurance companies, solicitors and other related organizations in pursuit of insurance claims.
  • Develop & deliver safety training programs to reduce work place accidents and incidents including assessment of such training activities.  Administer mandatory safety training and ensure all newly hired employees, agency employees, contractors, visitors and transferred employees receive proper training.


Your Key Qualifications

  • B.S. in Environmental, Health & Safety, or related Science Discipline is preferred; equivalent experience will also be considered.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ direct experience directing DOT Trucking regulatory compliance & risk management programs, including the oversight & administration of U.S. DOT’s Drug & Alcohol Programs.
  • Hands-on experience creating, maintaining and improving Transportation / DOT adherence / compliance including gap analysis, and site level implementation and adoption.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Federal and State DOT Trucking Regulations, especially the DOT’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, Hazardous Materials Regulations, Drug & Alcohol Regulations, including a working knowledge of the DOT Letters of Interpretation and other Regulatory Guidance.
  • Strong leadership and organization, with the ability to direct and achieve priorities, goals, and strategies with limited supervision.
  • Experience in a warehouse or manufacturing environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills and the ability to appropriately target communication to intended audience, ranging from leading Training Presentations for Operations and Management to interactions and meetings with a variety of Agency and Community stakeholders.
  • Proficient knowledge of computers and typical production software (e.g., MS Office, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
